Frequently asked questions
Do I need to disclose my surcharge?
Yes. The ACCC requires Australian businesses to clearly disclose any surcharge — including weekend, public holiday and card payment surcharges — before the customer commits to paying. Disclosure should be visible at the point of sale (menus, in-venue signs and booking confirmations).
What does the ACCC require for surcharge signage?
The ACCC expects surcharges to be displayed prominently and unambiguously, in language a customer can understand, alongside the price information they apply to. A separate menu line or in-venue sign that states the rate (e.g. "10% Sunday surcharge") generally meets this requirement.
Can I surcharge for card payments?
Card payment surcharges are permitted in Australia, but they must not exceed the actual cost of acceptance for that payment method, and they must be disclosed to the customer before payment. The ACCC and RBA publish guidance on card surcharging that operators should review.
